8 Questions With: Mike Dytri

8 Questions With: Mike Dytri

Mike Dytri is one of my oldest friends and mentors, a bonafide pioneer in the streetwear industry – although it should be pointed out that he was making rad gear long before the phrase “streetwear” meant what it does today. About a decade ago, Mike’s earlier brand Subfreakie was one of the, if not the, first brands to really push men’s tees in fashion-forward colors like pink and seafoam green – years before that became the trend again. Somehow, he has consistently managed to define “cutting-edge” when it comes to men’s contemporary clothing. He currently helms LA-based label Ludwig Van, while helping Adidas produce their special Muhammad Ali Signature Collection. Ludwig produces cut & sew apparel such as tees, fleece, pants, hats, and more. They have also had some impressive shoe collaborations with both California skate OGs Vans, and cutting-edge sneakerhead startup Gourmet. Often times, Mike’s design references are more than casual artistic gestures, but rather nods to years of dedication. For example, his graphics which reference fighting and legendary fighters only subtly hint at his longtime dedication to Mixed Martial Arts training. When I asked him about recent career highlights and he responded with how much he loves being a new dad! Stay tuned for more great Ludwig Van collaborations, his latest project Re:Visit, and even an art exhibition coming up from this dedicated creative. You can also follow him on Instagram.

What are you currently working on?
I’m currently working on the Muhammad Ali performance collection for adidas as well as an MMA training apparel range. I’m also adding new Ludwig Van product to the web-shop for this coming spring.

Ludwig2

How would you describe your job?
Haha, I don’t consider what I do a “job” per se, it’s more like thinking creatively and then executing. I’m happy that i’ve been able to make a living out of it for the last 16 years. The last “job” I had was in the mid 90’s, I was a bus-boy at Morton’s dinner house on Melrose (no longer there).

What does your average work day look like?
Get up in the early in the morning, go for a walk with my wife and daughter, have breakfast, head to either my design office or production factory, (depending on the project) work until about 5 then come home to have dinner. Then get some training in after my daughter goes to bed, either some sparring, grappling or cardio, or maybe just go to bed at 8PM.

Ludwig4

What’s the best thing about living and working in LA/South Bay?
Hmmmm, I guess it would be the weather, surf and the access to all sorts of apparel and design contractors. Almost anything can be produced and manufactured here in LA, however traffic is horrible.

Ludwig5

True! Where do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration at the magazine stand, on the mat, taking walks with my daughter and wife, surfing and listening to music.

Ludwig6

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grow up?
I wanted to be a Bruce Lee, (still kinda do).

Ludwig7

What are you reading at the moment?
I’m reading the questions that you sent me (literally) just recently, I read an article by Matt Miller on Artificial Intelligence.

Ludwig8

What’s your favorite post-work destination?
Probably home, then surfing or the gym.
